Eddie Huber and I also checked several spots on the Ohio River at Louisville
today and had the following additions to Jane & Pat's list:
a juv Black-bellied Plover at the Falls of the Ohio
3 Redheads
3 Common Loons
1 Mute Swan (perhaps a local bird??)
The Melco flood retention basin did its job in response to the circa 6.5-7.0
inches of rain received since Monday mid-day and was completely full this
afternoon; it had 50 or so Am Coots, 3 P-b Grebes, and 10 Horned Grebes (we
wondered where all of the hundreds of swamp sparrows had fled to?)
We checked Freeman Lake in the afternoon and it had a nice variety of
waterbirds including P-b Grebes, D-c Corms, both teal, No Shoveler, Am Wigeon,
Gadwall, Ringneck Ducks (70), Lesser Scaup (60), Canvasback (1 f), and Ruddy
Ducks.
Lake Nevin at Bernheim Forest had only about 30 P-b Grebes and two small pods
of Am Coots.
The showery weather with northish winds may bode more waterbird fallouts in the
next couple of days.
