Checked a few areas on the refuge this morning including Mitchell, Happy Hollow
and Goose Pond. Most all the action is on Mitchell where there is good
shorebird habitat around the entire perimeter of the main lake. I accessed the
bar from the levee as viewing is best from this side in morning light. Most of
the birds are congregated at the far north end. Several waterfowl and good
numbers of common species abound. I counted 98 yellowlegs in one sweep of the
lake. Greater seemed to out number lesser by a slight margin. Most numbers
are estimates. Highlights include:
MITCHELL:
Great Egret 20
Can goose a bunch
Green-w teal 20 +
Mallard 5
Pintail 10
Northern shoveler 10+
Blue-w Teal 75 +
American widgeon 10 +
Gadwall 8+
Bald eagle 2
Killdeer 25+
Greater Yellowlegs 60
Lesser yellowlegs 40
Least sand 50+
Pectoral sand 20+
Snipe 10+
HAPPY HOLLOW
Sora 3
GOOSE POND
Marsh wren 1
Killdeer 2
Least sand 10
Fish crow 5 --having a heated debate in a cypress tree in the middle of Goose
Pond. I can only guess that it could have been over the merits of flying
farther South whilst it is 93 degrees here.
