Greetings BirdKY,

The KY Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources began songbird migration
banding at our Headquarters in Frankfort on September 5th. This is the
only songbird migration banding occurring in the state, and it has been
quite an informative process. As of October 12th, we have captured 399
new individuals and logged 77 recaptures (476 total captures) of 49
species in 513 net hours, equaling a capture rate of 0.93 birds/net
hour. This is equivalent to catching 37 birds in a morning with our
full complement of 8 nets.

If you would like to stop by, please respond to me off-list for
scheduling, etc; my contact information is below. Remember, the safety
of the birds is our number one priority, but we'll do our best to
demonstrate some of our techniques as well as the kinds of information
we are learning from these efforts. Banding usually begins at sunrise
and lasts for five hours. At present, that puts the first net check at
around 8:20. We will likely continue banding into early/middle
November, as time and weather permits.

Species composition is as follows (bold indicates Neotropical migrant
species, italics indicates temperate migrants, and both indicates
species characterized by both types of movements); the first and last
dates of capture are in parentheses.
