[birdky] Great Blue Heron at Meadowbrook Park, Lexington

Meadowbrook Park is a long, narrow--relative to its length, strip of meadow
and wood, in south Lexington. It is adjacently south of Meadowbrook Golf
course. A perennial tributary of the West Hickman creek flows through its
length, dividing at one point and meeting again forming an island about 300
yards long, that floods pretty heavily. I was out there yesterday morning
sneaking along and listening, when a noticably sized shadow crossed me, and
looking up saw a Great Blue Heron lazily flying about 40 feet above my head.
It landed down about 200 yards away, took stock of its surroundings for a time,
then walked over to the paved walking track, strolled down the track for a bit
till it got near the stream and then disappeared toward it.

Other birds present at Meadowbrook park as of today: American Redstart (1),
Golden-Crowned Kinglet (several), White-throated Sparrow (several), Cedar
Waxing (several), Red-Winged Blackbirds (several), House Finch, Downy
Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, and birds you would expect to see. I have also
heard a couple of birds out there that I haven't been able to identify as of
yet.

An interesting note about this spot, before I began posting to birdky, is
that a couple of Red-tailed hawks came to reside in a large Tulip Poplar Tree,
right smack-dab on the Meadowbrook golf course. They stayed there several
weeks. The golf course administration enthusiastically gave me permission to
go out there and observe them. The large hawk just perched there on a limb 25
feet above my head regarding me regarding him.

  Best birding wishes,
  Ben Albritton

p.s. in my previous posting about Veteran's park, where I listed several
birds present at the park, I had a brain-lapse while typing. I typed
"yellow-bellied" woodpecker, but I meant Red-bellied Woodpecker.
