[birdky] RPT: KOS Fall meeting

More than 50 members and guests attended this past weekend's meeting of
KOS at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park. Sat AM field trips within the
park and to nearby Jesse Stuart State Nature Preserve were pretty
routine with clouds and a few showers dampening bird activity. Still
there were migrant songbirds to be found in the forests. Mid-day and
afternoon trips to South Shore WMA yielded some of the more interesting
reports of the day including two different Bald Eagles, Osprey, both
Accips, and one or two Merlins in the raptor line, as well as several
Marsh Wrens. The Sunday morning trip to Minor Clark Fish Hatchery in
Rowan County did not yield many reports of interest, but a few
shorebirds were found (Semi Plover, Killdeer, Solitary Spiper, Least
Spiper, Wilson's Snipe) along with American Pipits, Osprey, and
Broad-winged Hawks. As reported elsewhere, the gorgeous blue sky was
filled with migrating Monarch butterflies. Weekend species total was
right around 100.

This meeting's programs were excellent, with featured talks focusing on
new Peregrine Falcon nesting records in 2006 (Budd Veverka), digital
photography (Lana Hays) and hummingbirds (Chris Sloan).
