Brian Davidson, Shawchyi Vorisek, and myself spent much of the day on
Tuesday checking out a couple of areas that yielded a nice list of sparrows.
We first visited one of Brian's Henslow's Sparrow study sites, this one in
southern Hardin County where Brian tabulated an astonishing 120 or more
Henslow's territories this past summer! As expected, a few Henslow's
Sparrows were still there, with great looks at a couple of freshly molted
individuals. We also came across at least a half-dozen Grasshopper Sparrows,
some almost as sharp looking as the Henslow's, but one or two without tails
and very molty. Other sparrows included Swamp (many), Song, Field, Lincoln's
(2), and White-crowned (1 heard). We also had at least two Sedge Wrens,
including likely vocalizations of young, a Marsh Wren, and many Common
Yellowthroats and Palm Warblers. Our second stop was at a wetland mitigation
site in the Rolling Fork River bottoms near Boston in Nelson County; in the
limited time we had there, we kicked up three Bobolinks, several Savannah
Sparrows, dozens of Swamp Sparrows, and two brightly colored Nelson's
Sharp-tailed Sparrows!
