Gusty winds yesterday preceded by four days of rainy
weather had the flats teeming with shorebirds on
Kentucky and Barkley Lakes. Eleven species were
recorded at Little River and Eddy Creek on Barkley,
and Jonathan Creek and Blood River on Kentucky. It
was also a great day for soaring birds, with raptors
in view with every scan of the horizon. Two flocks of
White Pelicans were seen turning lazy circles high
against the blue sky as they migrated. Other
highlights are as follows:
Am. White Pelican 80+
DC Cormorant Hundreds above Barkley Dam
Great Egret scattered in the bays with 20+ at Eddy Cr
Snowy Egret 3 Eddy Creek
Mallard
GW Teal
Pintail
Shoveler
Gadwall
A. Wigeon
Bald Eagle 5+ at the lakes and an adult in flight
along the Hopkinsville by-pass
Merlin male at Jonathan Cr
Black-necked Stilt Blood River
Gr. Yellowlegs Little River
Lesser Yellowlegs all
Western Sandpiper Jon
Semipalmated Sandpiper 1 at Blood River
Least Sandpiper all few hundred
Pectoral Sandpiper all
Dunlin all including several molting juvs
Stilt Sandpiper all 10 at Eddy
W. Snipe Jon
Tree and Barn Swallows Little River and Eddy Creek
The Selasphorus hummer was still present at the house
as of October 14 as was at least 1 Ruby-throated.
Other recent sightings include a Eurasian
Collared-Dove at Bowling Green on the 13th, and a
Lapland Longspur at McElroy Lake (dry) in Warren
County on the 14th.
