[birdky] Ky Annotated Checklist Errata/Addenda
- From: Brainard.Palmer-Ball@xxxxxx

Some months ago I mentioned compilation of an errata/addenda to the
Annotated Checklist's 2nd edition (KOS 2003).
Below is a text copy of the errors and omissions of which I am aware (this
is not a list of "updates" to the book, simply additions of birds from 2002
or earlier of which I was unaware or messed up in the accounts in some way).
This is sort of a "draft" even though it represents all of which I am aware,
and it may not change unless I have additional input. So please feel free to
supply me with any additional corrections or additions from 2002 or before.
Also, if anyone would like to have a MS Word version of this file, please
let me know.
Thanks,
bpb, Louisville
Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Kentucky
ERRATA/ADDENDA
B. Palmer-Ball, Jr. October 1, 2004
References to Lake Pewee, Hopkins County should be Lake Peewee. For years,
the sign at the roadway in to the dam said Lake Pewee Dam Road with only
three 'e's and local observer James Hancock has always referred the name of
the lake with three, not four, 'e's. Maps have always identified the lake
as Lake Peewee, but I apparently perpetuated the incorrect spelling.
In compiling peak counts for Golden Eagle (p. 52) , I overlooked reports of
7 birds on the Land Between the Lakes Christmas Bird Count, 28 December 1971
(KW 48:7, 1972), and 5 birds on the same count 23 December 1968 (KW 45:13,
1969).
References to a Black-bellied Plover and a Franklin's Gull in Bell County,
13 October 1979, were both incorrectly attributed to the Cumberland Plateau
section of Kentucky, but the location was within the Cumberland Mountains
section of the state.
Subsequent to publication of the Annotated Checklist's 2nd edition, I have
been made aware of a reliable sight record of a Long-eared Owl in Letcher
County in the late 1990s (Kyle Napier, pers. comm.).
Omitted from the Cliff Swallow account (p. 114) was a report of nesting in
Butler County in the summer of 2000 (Mark Monroe, pers. comm.).
Omitted from the Golden-winged Warbler account (p. 126) were the reports of
possible/probable breeding birds recently reported by Stedman from McCreary
County (BIRDKY post in May 2002; KW 79: 90-91, 2003).
Missing from the Western Meadowlark account (p. 156) is a record from
McElroy Lake, Warren County, 10 March 1991 (B. Palmer-Ball/L. Rauth, notes)
The Western Meadowlark listed for Ballard County in December 2000 (p. 156)
should be changed to McCracken County.
