[birdky] Warren Glossy Ibis 12 Oct 2003

My nephew Carter Hooks and I observed 3 Glossy Ibis at
Meng's Pond in Warren County shortly before noon
today. One adult/1st basic and 2 juveniles were
feeding in the pond along with a flock of Mallards and
2 Green-winged Teal.
The juveniles were retaining bold barring on the
throat, but had begun to develop whitish lines to the
border of the facial skin. The adult/1st basic showed
heavy whitish streaking to the head which the juvs
lacked, and had nicelly developed edges to the facial
skin as well as dark iris. It had no trace of barring
on the throat. The body plumage of the adult didn't
appear to be much brighter than the juvs leading to
the thought that it could be a 1st basic.
Intending to bring my digital camera, I grabbed the
wrong camera bag this morning and brought the
camcorder instead. Although the sky was heavily
overcast at the time of observation, I was able to
obtain video through my scope showing enough detail to
document as Glossy Ibis.
Carter and I then left the birds feeding peacefully
and I went by the house to get Joanie and the camera.
The skies began clearing on our way back to the pond
and I was excited about getting some nice digital
photos of the birds in the good lighting. To our
great disappointment, we arrived at the pond to
discover the ducks alone, the ibis were gone. We then
checked ponds in the area with no luck at finding the
birds again.
This represents Kentucky's 2nd record for Plegadis
ibis confirmed as Glossy.
Other recent observations from Warren County include:
Oct 6:
Sora and Lesser Yellowlegs at Walton's Pond and 2
Marsh Wrens at Chaney
Oct 8:
Loudly vocalizing Evening Grosbeak in my neighbors
yard along Drakes Creek
2 Marsh Wrens in the ditch at McElroy which is
otherwise dry
Lincoln's Sparrow at Walton's Pond which is also dry
now
