[birdky] 2 visits to McElroy Lake

I have belonged to KOS about 2 years now but have continued to bird almost
entirely on my land and a few neighboring farms. This past Wednesday I finally
got around to making the short drive to McElroy lake for a birding morning
(already reported by Dave). Though the birds that morning were mostly far away
and the heat shimmer was wobbling the tiny specks that could be seen, the
overall experience was so fun I just had to stop by there again this Sunday to
show the place to my wife, Alison. It was sort of on the way to the Kroger
store in Bowling Green any way.
The flock of about 50 Dunlin that kept flashing by on Wednesday settled down
on Sunday to feed on a nearby mud flat. We also made a new acquaintance. Tom
Durbin arrived in time to identify for us a flock of 6 Forrester's Terns that
were making passes up and down the lake and to point out a male Pintail that
was close enough for its neck stripe to be clearly seen.
I asked myself why it has taken me so long to discover this place and had to
confess that I have restricted myself to familiar territory because of a few
unpleasant encounters over the years with peculiar landowners.
What a pleasant change to encounter a fellow birder rather than someone to
whom the concept of birding is so foreign he suspects I'm really doing
something else, like hunting ginseng or arrowheads or planting marijuana.
