Spoonbill info at bottom.
I made a family trip up through LBL from TN and ended up at Kentucky and
Barkley Dams.
On the down river portion of the Kentucky Dam I was walking along the
western shore trying to get gull pictures when I walked under a tree filled
with
adult Black-crowned Night-Herons. I estimate 10. I only saw adults. I managed
to get some good pix and a few not so good flying that I intend to post on
Internet later if anyone wants to see them.
The location was a little boat landing down about 2 miles from the dam, past
the bridge construction.
I also saw one in a adult at Barkley Dam, western side down river, almost
even with the end of the lock.
The National Audobon Society lists them as "threatened" in KY.See:

At Kentucky Dam, there were numerous 15 or more, Great Blue Herons sitting
on the shore very close to people. Barkley had a lot less activity. Haven't had
a chance to review pix of gulls to get an idea of what I took.
Went to the nature station Sunday at LBL. One of the workers told me she
walked down to Honker Bay or wherever it is the spoonbill was seen and did not
see it. She has not seen it.
