KSNPC had a quarterly meeting today and part of the meeting was a field
trip to Lower Howards Creek State Nature Preserve southwest of
Winchester along the Kentucky River There was a nice mix of passerine
migrants in a couple of flocks. I can now count myself among the ranks
who have already seen Red-breasted Nuthatches this fall with 2
(hopefully we will have a good enough cone crop to keep these guys here
this winter ... along with any other boreal birds that head south!).
Warblers included nice, extended looks at male Golden-winged and
Black-throated Blue warblers, plenty of Maggies and Tennessees, No.
Parula, Chestnut-sided, and my first Bay-breasted, along with
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (if anyone happens to get them at their feeders
in coming weeks, please pass the info along ... I'm curious if there
will be a decent showing after they were so prevalent this spring), and
both tanagers.
