Enjoyed a trip to the Mitchell Lake and Smokey Road areas mid afternoon before
work. As others have mentioned the lake level is way down and many of the
birds are difficult to see from the edges as they are scattered over an
expansive area. The resident Canada goose flock also makes approaching the
better areas on the flats difficult. By far the most common species are still
Killdeer and Pectoral sandpipers with several other nice things mixed in. The
highlight for me were 5 buff-br sandpipers off Smokey road and 4 Baird's
sandpipers at Mitchell. Birds seen include:
Mitchell
Killdeer 300+
Gr yell 2
Lesser yell 5
Spotted sp 1
Semi sand 2
Western sand 1
Least sand 30 +
Baird's sand 4
Pectoral sand 150 +
Stilt sand 4
Smokey road (Disked cornfield beside racetrack road)
Killdeer 100 +
Buff-breasted sand 5
Horned larks 50 +
