The no. of C. terns dropped to zero in recent days at the Lake Barkley island I
have been watching - down from about 350 a week or so ago. Last evening at
dusk the number was back up to about 100 but suddenly all the terns departed.
As I drifted south in my boat, I could clearly see the outline of a
great-horned owl on the nearest tree to the roosting site about 30 yds. from
the sandbar. This could explain why the C. terns stopped roosting at this
sandbar. I was a bit surprised to see a great-horned owl at mid-lake but the C.
terns are very vocal and may have resulted in the gho visit.
