Saturday, September 16, was the Jefferson County (Louisville), Kentucky,
North American Migration Count. The day was clear and beautiful, with
bright sun and little wind. 14 observers participated in 9 groups. Thanks
to everyone for their participation and reporting.
Observations were fairly average, with 111 species and 5,587 individual
birds reported. Several observers mentioned observing fewer warbler species
than usual, and the reports bear that out, with only 18 species reported.
Part of the explanation is fewer total hours of observation (39) than usual.
For context, here are the 1998-2006 statistics, given as low - median -
high:
# of species: 100 - 111 - 118
# of individual birds: 4,710 - 5,587 - 12266
# of warbler species: 18 - 23 - 28
# of participants: 9 - 13 - 16
# of hours by all parties: 39 - 48.5 - 70
Reports of birds not typically observed on the fall migration count include:
green-winged teal, n. pintail, bald eagle (subadult at Falls), peregrine
falcon, stilt sandpiper, lesser yellowlegs, semipalmated sandpiper, herring
gull, willow flycatcher (responded to tape of its call), barn swallow,
ruby-crowned kinglet (4!), veery, and Connecticut warbler (very uncommon in
fall).
Lower-than-usual numbers were reported for: belted kingfisher, white-eyed
vireo, American crow (about 1/3 the usual total), wood thrush, brown
thrasher, Tenn. warbler, Nashville warbler, black-throated green warbler,
ovenbird, com. yellowthroat, brown-headed cowbird (NONE reported), and house
finch.
Higher-than-usual numbers were reported for: great blue heron, e.
wood-pewee, warbling vireo, red-eyed vireo, bay-breasted warbler,
black-and-white warbler, and blue grosbeak,
