My plan was to take advantage of a sunny, cool day to do a long hike on
a tract of land that needed a fall visit along the Red River in Wolfe
County today. However, clouds hung around until 5:15 p.m., just as I
returned to the truck!

It was nice to be in the woods, though. I think I encountered mushrooms
in greater abundance than I have ever seen them before ... combination
of all the rain and cool weather have brought them out. Bird highlights
included a Ruffed Grouse (heard when flushed but not seen!); several
squabbling and gobbling Wild Turkeys (didn't know they did it that much
in fall ... the cool weather again, probably); a Merlin (probably a male
based on size); a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher; a female Blue Grosbeak
feeding a nearly full-grown juvenile; and 11 species of warblers
highlighted by a couple of Blackburnian and an always great to see male
Black-throated Blue :o)
