I've been birding every weekend recently but haven't seen much to
report.
16 September 06
6:30am 60º clear, to 11am 75º
This past week Henderson Co. got dumped on with rain for two days,
but it was apparently spotty. Some areas flooded, others not at all.
So there have been some changes to water levels. In addition they
have started flooding impoundments at the Sloughs.
I covered 268 slough, Grassy Pond/Powell's Lake unit, 1574 slough,
Horseshoe Road slough, Pond Creek Marsh, and Hardy Slough.
Highlights and water level observations.
268 slough, nothing seen!, water level up again into the weeds
Grassy Pond/Powells Lake Unit, Honey Cypress Slough is flooded into
the weeds while other sloughs in the area are at low levels.
Lesser Yellowlegs
1547 slough, low water level, Lesser Yellowlegs, Least Sand., 2
Wilson's Snipe, 5 Great Egrets
Horseshoe Road slough, water level at west end low; nothing by Killdeer
Pond Creek Marsh, highest water level I have seen. I had to wade
through 6" deep water
and the sandy area for trapping ducks was almost covered in water.
Pied-billed Grebe, 1 has been there for three weeks.
Hardy Slough, the impoundments are being flooded as is done every
year about now. One of the areas had been disced before the flooding
and that was where I saw 5 Am. Golden Plovers, 7 imm. Little Blue
Herons, 20 Lesser Yellowlegs.
