About a dozen folks birded the Melco flood retention basin this morning. We
tallied a new high species total for shorebirds at the site in a single day ...
15. The two and one-half week total for shorebird species there is now up to 21
with recent additions being Willet and White-rumped Sandpiper. Today's
highlights as follows:
3 Semipalmated Plovers (2 ad; 1 juv)
ca 50 Killdeer
4 Greater Yellowlegs (most juvs)
50+ Lesser Yellowlegs9 (most juvs)
1 juv Willet (has been present since Thursday)
1 Solitary Sandpiper
2 Spotted Sandpipers
ca 35 Pectoral Sandpipers
6-8+ Semi Sandpipers (1 ad; rest juvs)
15-20 Least Sandpipers (1 ad; rest juvs)
1 juv Baird's Sandpiper
1 ad White-rumped Sandpiper (also present yesterday)
14+ juv Stilt Sandpipers
12+ juv Short-billed Dowitchers
1 Wilson's Snipe
5 juv Black Terns
2 Caspian Terns (ad with a juv)
Yesterday I visited the Falls of the Ohio and also had an ad. Sanderling and
two Buff-breasted Sandpipers with at least one Baird's for a total of 17
species of shorebirds at Louisville yesterday (been a LONG time since I've seen
that many in Jefferson County in a day)!
