[birdky] Minor Clark Peregrine update

Hello all,

To update those who are interested, the banded peregrine observed by Lana Hays at Minor Clark on September 4 has been positively identified based upon her photos. Initially, some confusion existed regarding the federal band, which offered conflicting evidence to that of the color band, but the discrepancies have been resolved.

The bird is a 2-year old adult male born originally in Minnesota (in captivity) on May 1, 2003. He was then sent to Kentucky, where he was banded and released into the wild with 5 other captive-born peregrines in June 2003 at a site in the Red River Gorge in Powell County. He is one of the last peregrines reintroduced in the state. Currently, we do not know if he maintains a territory in the state, as the Gorge has been notoriously difficult to survey effectively. We do, however, plan to conduct more intensive surveys next spring/summer, and we hope to find him raising future peregrine generations in our fine state.

I'm not sure if the bird has been observed at the hatchery since Lana's post.

Cheers,
