Subject: Can you help?
Hello,
We are writing on behalf of the Cave Research Foundation (CRF), a
not-for-profit organization with a research center and approximately 160
acres of land adjacent to Mammoth Cave National Park. CRF is developing land
management policies and, in conjunction with the Kentucky Chapter of the
Nature Conservancy, plans are underway for conducting prescribed burns on
our property with the goal of habitat improvement and native plant
restoration. In preparation for that, we are hopeful that we can find
volunteers willing to conduct bird censuses at periodic intervals,
preferably beginning this fall.
Although we are members of National Audubon Society (and active in our local
Missouri Chapter, the East Ozarks Audubon Society), we are only amateur
birders and we are far enough away from the site that we cannot do the
censusing in a proper manner ourselves. Do you know persons who might be
interested in doing this? The property, Hamilton Valley, is half wooded and
half field land, and is very scenic. A large sinkhole (technically a polje)
is visible from the research center, and is a major focus of our interest.
It has been found to contain numerous wildflowers, some rare (like
Rattlesnake Master). The sinkhole hillsides are wooded.
The Research Center at Hamilton Valley consists of a spacious fully equipped
building (large hall suitable for workshops, kitchen, bathrooms with
showers, a spacious porch overlooking the sinkhole: a good place of retreat
from field research). We also have bunkhouse facilities available at a
reasonable cost should volunteers be interested in staying over in order to
conduct early morning counts.
Please let us know if you can help us out or know someone who can. You may
also contact the Hamilton Valley Director, Pat Kambesis, (
pnkambesis@xxxxxxxx <mailto:pnkambesis@xxxxxxxx> ) who lives on site. We
should also mention that we will be out of the country from Sept. 14th to
October 6th, and it would be best to contact Pat during that time. Thanks
very much for your consideration.
Sue Hagan, Mick Sutton
