Tuesday, I birded Ky Dam for the Long tailed Jaeger and watched it from great
distance, fly back and forth but it never ventured near enough to ID it, myself
,positively. So, Today I went back armed and ready. I arrived at the dam at
about 8:30 and much to my dismay, there was a haze over the water making
scoping very difficult. I decided to wonder around and get a feel for this
lake and find spots along the waters edge further up from the dam. I found
lots of places along the edge and no Jaeger. The sun was beginning to break
through and I had just set up my scope on the dam again, when David Roemer
arrived and after a minute or two he had the bird in his scope. Still too far
for ID purpose. We ended up birding in a boat and that is the way to go. What a
thrill. The bird sat in the water for a while and then flew over us a couple
of times and settled near us again. It was less then ten feet several times. We
drifted past it a couple of times and got great looks, and able to see all of
the field marks really well and got frame filling pictures. (hopefully they
will be sharp) . The bird was not disturbed by our being in a boat and so
near. A great day for birding. A LIFE bird for me. Thanks Hap for a Great ID
of a great bird. Nancy
