[birdky] Avocets in Mercer County

Usually, our visits to KU's E.W. Brown Power Plant, (between Danville and
Shakertown), don't produce any sightings worth reporting to BIRDKY. But,
today's early afternoon trip around the plant's ash pond was surprisingly
productive, including two gorgeous American Avocets and a Lesser Scaup!
Here's the
full list:
Pied-Billed Grebe (4)
Double-crested Cormorant (4)
Great Blue Heron (8)
Canada Goose (4)
Mallard (5)
Lesser Scaup (1)
Red-Tailed Hawk (1)
American Kestrel (1)
American Coot (12)
Killdeer (3)
American Avocet (2, photographed)
Greater Yellowlegs (2)
Spotted Sandpiper (1)
Mourning Dove (1)
Eastern Meadowlark (1) . . .
. . . and one additional pesky peep. We weren't bold enough to name it,
because we couldn't get a decent photo to send to an expert who could help us.
Our best call was Sanderling, but . . .
Access to the power plant ash pond is by permit. A permit can be obtained by
requesting it from the plant office and then returning to them a signed
agreement to abide by their rules.
