[birdky] RPT: New arrivals

Amy and I took a swing through Henderson and Union counties yesterday,
Sept. 27th. Highlights were mostly first fall arrivals for us including a
few Swamp Sparrows and some dabbling ducks including about 10 Northern
Pintails and a single Ring-necked Duck at the Sauerheber Unit of Sloughs
WMA. Habitat looks pretty good for our upcoming KOS weekend at Henderson.

At the Camp Mines complex in Union County, waterfowl (650+ individuals of 9
species) were way more numerous than shorebirds (about 45 individuals of 6
species). All regular dabblers except Am Black Duck were seen including
many teal of both species. There has been a noticeable influx of
Pied-billed Grebes and American Coots this week, with both species far
outnumbering previous season counts. Shorebird highlights were a flyover
American Golden-Plover, 2 Dunlin (a day later than my previous early fall
KY observation) and 2 "long-billed" dowitchers that were presumed to be
Long-billed because of the ridiculously extreme length of their probosci.
Savannah Sparrows also have arrived in numbers this past week. One Black
Tern dropped in to rest with some of the waterfowl. An adult Peregrine
Falcon buzzed the place late in the day; even though there were 10s of
thousands of birds to pick from, it moved right by, but then picked a small
songbird out of the sky in stride about 1/4 mile south of the impoundments,
and carried it on southward, perhaps to eat it once on roost for the
night?!? Also, an adult male Yellow-headed Blackbird was observed near
sunset, which makes at least the third year in a row one has been seen at
the blackbird roost there.
