When one sees a life bird that you've waited years to see, your heart skips a 
beat.  That is what happened this evening as I watched the shorebirds on the 
Blood River mud flats in Calloway County.  I knew I needed to be positive of 
the ID so I did what any modern day birder would do.  I turned on my cell phone 
and called Jeff Wilson in Memphis. 
Jeff talked me through a double check of the identifying field marks while I 
watched the bird fly and feed.  It was more fun than reading the book and I 
never had to take my eyes off the bird, thanks Jeff.
All the shorebirds took to the air and flew off for the evening at 6:45pm.  I 
don't know if they will return in the morning.  I believe the Hudsonian 
Godwit called three times.  
Other new arrivals were Black-bellied Plover and Buff-breasted Sandpiper.   
We will search the mud flats for the Godwit in the morning.  Let's hope we are 
fortunate enough to have another day to watch this great shorebird.  This is 
an early fall record for Hudsonia Godwit in KY according to the latest 
Annotated Checklist.
