This report is for September 12-16, 2003. Raptors were very slow until the
last day, when small kettles & groups started coming over after 4:00 p.m.
Totals for the five days were as follows:
Bald Eagles 2
Red-Tailed Hawks 2
Ospreys 1
Northern Harrier 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
Red-shouldered Hawk 1
American kestral 2
Unidentified Falcons 2
Unidentified Raptors 5
Broad Wings 211
Warbler activity was good,
especially on the 15th, when we had 11 species, as follows:
Oven Bird
Pine
American Redstart
Hooded
Black-throated green
Magnolia
Nashville
Black & White
Tennessee
Chesnut-Sided
Blackburnian
Combining these with the other usual suspects gave us a total of 46 species.
It appears the next few days will be the peak of the migration, and some of
us will be going back before & during the coming weekend. We have seen as many
as 600-700 per hr and 1200-1300 per day in previous yrs. Join us if you
desire to see a lot of raptors!!
One other observation....On the afternoon of the 15th we had lots of
activity, including the 2 eagles. We didn't actually see the contact, but
raptors
stooping & buzzing around the mountain top produced a trio of large feathers
drifting by the site. Would love to have identified them, but we were unable
to
retrieve them.
