A new publication by Texas Partners in Flight at the Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department (TPWD) has just been released titled "Birds of the Oaks
and Prairies and Osage Plains of Texas: A Field Checklist" by Brush Freeman.
Freeman is a longtime and well-known birder who resides between Austin and
Bastrop, TX.  

This is a 16-page booklet that covers the (combined) Blackland Prairies,
Post Oak Savannahs, Cross Timbers, and more in Texas.  To see a map of this
giant coverage area, please see the Texas portions of Physiographic Areas
#08 & 33 at this web site <http://www.blm.gov/wildlife/pifplans.htm>.  The
checklist includes a species list of 471 birds with monthly abundance codes.


Please note that this is a 'checklist' and does not include pictures of
birds or places to go birding -- it's an excellent reference piece.  You can
get a free copy by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) with 2
first-class stamps on it to the name and address below.  This must be a 6x9"
clasp or self-adhesive envelope for the booklet to fit -- nothing smaller or
larger.  

Simply fold your empty SASE envelope and place it into a legal-sized
envelope with 1 first-class stamp on it.  There are other SASE orders
trickling in, so please write "Oaks & Prairies Checklist" somewhere obvious
so we know what to send you.  Incomplete or vague orders will be returned to
sender!  This free offer expires on 15 October 2003 at which time a $1
donation to the "TPWD Nongame Fund" will need to be included with the SASE
directions listed above.  This donation will enable us to reprint when we're
out-of-stock -- thanks for helping us maintain our outreach and education
efforts.
