Monday evening provided pretty good birding at Ash Pond. Number of different
species was pretty good and there were pretty good numbers of a few species.
The Yellowlegs were heard calling before I even lifted the binocs. The peeps
were still falling in when I left around 8 pm. Large kettles of mixed
vultures kept breaking out all over. Most of the kettles were beyond the
plant and on the Herrington Lake side of the pond. A few vultures were on
the flats providing very good looks at them. A large doe was seen on the
back side of the pond w/ two fawns. The fawn's spots are ever fading just
barely visible through the scope and the Whitetail's rusty summer coats are
giving way to their brown/gray winter attire.
Heres the list of birds seen.....
5 Greater Yellowlegs
2 Spotted Sandpipers
20+ Least Sandpipers
10 Semipalmated Sandpipers
100+ Mourning Doves (those are what I counted at one time, they were coming
and going all the time)
1 Semipalmated Plover
2 D.C. Cormorant
3 Great Egrets
2 Great Blue Heron
Black Ducks
Mallards
Canada Geese
Eastern Meadow Larks
American Robin
Northern Cardinal
Song Sparrow
Turkey Vulture
Black Vulture
Take care,
Ed Richards
