Speaking for myself, it's interesting how easy it is to be casual about bird
features when you have an obvious ID like a spoonbill. I contributed to the
age confusion by remembering a bare head that wasn't there. Luckily, I've
never made any other mistaken identifications. :)

I figured I should nip something in the bud that I probably caused by not
looking closely enough at the spoonbill yesterday. I must admit to not
looking too closely at the bird as we did not take scopes and didn't want to
get too close so as to scare it ... so it is entirely possible that we were
mistaken in thinking that the head of this bird was not feathered, thus
taking us to a theory that it was 2nd year. I would have sworn that it was
not, but Tom's photo and Roseanna's observation from mid-week is of a bird
with a head covered in white feathers. There could, of course, be two birds,
but this is probably a lot less likely that our observations simply not
being careful enough. I also must admit to not looking at wing tips, but
Roseanna's observation of dusky wing tips is consistent with Tom's photos.

Thanks, Roseanna, for asking me about that!
