Each August as Lake Barkley is lowered, I have noticed that C. tern numbers
increase on the north end of an island about 1 mile south of Little River Bay.
As more of the island sand bar is above water, numbers of resting and roosting
C. terns increase. The total number present now is estimated at over 300.
Only a few days ago there were about 250 present. At first when only a small
amount of the island sand bar is out of the water the terns leave the island at
about dark flying north to roost somewhere else. As the roosting area becomes
larger as the lake gets lower, the C. terns stay on the island tip to roost and
other C. terns fly in from the North mostly to join the roosting terns.

The island is at approx. River Mile 60 on the west side of the channel. The
island can be seen in the distance looking north from the Hwy 68 Bridge. Today
25 dc cormorants had joined the C. terns as well as 2 great egrets and 1 gbh.
A family of ospreys are always near-by in their nest area.
