I decided to swing by the Falls this morning before heading to
Caperton and Mayfair.
From the overlook at the Interpretive Center there was not much
going on in the way of shorebirds. In fact I only saw two, a killdeer
with a friendly pectoral sandpiper following along behind. These two
popped up from behind a ridge as I was about to leave. There is a lot
of the fossil beds exposed right now so who knows what other birds
are there but out of sight?
osprey fly-over
dc cormorants
great egrets, BCNHs, GBHs
several ring-billed gulls
purple martins, barn swallows and swifts
Wave rock: exposed bars
1 caspian tern
black vultures
great egrets, BCNH, GBH
dc cormorants
only shorebirds were killdeer; when I arrived one was being half-
heartedly chased by a juvenile peregrine (which then landed on the
beds and sat in a shallow pool for a while before proceeding to bathe)
Caperton:
The most interesting occurrence was a micro-fallout of warblers – 3
to be exact: Northern Parula,m., Redstart, f., and one that I never
did see the head or legs of due to the leaves as it moved about
feeding. The mystery warbler had two prominent white wing bars, warm/
buffy wash on chest turning to white on the flanks with blurry
streaking down the sides. Its tail appeared long and and white
underneath as were the tail coverts. Even though it would be very
early, the closest I came up with is blackburnian, first fall female.
Other options were pine warbler (first fall and juv. too dull
overall, wing bars not prominent enough), bay-breasted (first fall,
color extends down flanks to undertail coverts), or blackpoll (first
fall too yellow and wing bars not prominent enough). Comments/
suggestions/insight?
juvenile turkey ran down the path in front of me
cedar waxwings
summer tanager, m.
baltimore oriole, f.
phoebe
red-eyed vireo
prothonotary warbler
worm-eating warbler
cat bird
Pond - water level is very low
2 green herons
GBH
1 BCNH
kingfisher, f.
12 wood ducks
mallard, f. with 3 ducklings
Upon exiting Caperton I was met by police, two crime scene unit
trucks with accompanying individuals – and a police car blocking the
entrance to the parking lot – one of the police asked if I were Mary…
(a little disconcerting). He apologized about interfering with my
birding. (and I had wondered why I only encountered one other person
in the time I was there!) Seems that a body had been found yesterday
and the crime scene team had returned to finish their investigation.
YIKES! When I drove back by after an uneventful Mayfair (vegetation
high, unable to see mudflats) yellow crime scene tape had been put
up across the front of Caperton.
