[birdky] INFO: Birding etiquette

I hate to have to post this message to BIRDKY, but it has come to my
attention that two local birders ignored all of the internet-posted and
phone-messaged instructions and entered the fenced-in Little Stint site
outside of supervised hours on Sunday afternoon. I would have thought
that all would have recognized the degree to which I placed the
reputation of not only myself, but also our local club and its members,
on the line in arranging access to this site. I know that I made it
clear to everyone that the club was just in the early stages of
arranging access to a site that will hopefully be productive for many
years to come. But as is so often the case, the trust one must put in
the hands of his fellow human beings can be violated at any time and
even when not expected. It has seemed to me that we as birders have
become a bit better about such breaches of etiquette these days ... and
I certainly would have thought that our fine club would not have
individuals among its members who would violate that trust.
A few years I was called out for what seemed to be unduly disturbing the
Pendleton County Snowy Owl, so I know that it never hurts to be reminded
of one's actions, especially how they can appear in the eyes of others.
So I hope no one will mind if I remind everyone that their actions can
very easily affect the privileges that we are all afforded, and for the
sake of a continued relationship with the myriad of landowners to whom
we owe the greatest debt for access to their lands, please don't let
this happen again. The club is continuing the process of attempting to
work out some level of access to the stint site (hopefully for many
years to come); for this reason the situation is especially delicate and
it remains incumbent upon all of us not to think of ourselves first.
