June Ann Perkins, host of this past winter's adult male Rufous
Hummingbird in Corbin, emailed me on July 28th that she had seen an
adult male Rufous at her feeder! I was thinking chances were good it was
her bird returning, but she only saw it twice that afternoon, so it must
have been another that has moved on? That is a new early "fall" date for
KY for Rufous.
We got our Indian grass mowed for hay a bit late this year, so I don't
think that Sedge Wrens will show up to nest, but three male Henslow's
Sparrows have taken up residence in our biggest field during the past
couple of weeks. I kicked up 3 or 4 this morning while walking thru the
field, so I'm hoping some females have arrived with the males for some
late-season nesting.
Most know how Blue Jays will imitate hawk calls, the most commonly
attributed imitation being Red-shouldered. Over the past 10 years I have
noticed that as Cooper's Hawks have increased, Blue Jays have started
imitating them frequently, and quite well I might add. So well that I am
not sure which species I am hearing many times, which can be especially
frustrating on BBS routes! There has been a pair of Red-tailed Hawks
nesting quite close to the house on the family farm in Louisville for
several years; this year the juvenile birds (2) from the nest hung
around quite close to the yard for several weeks, wailing incessantly
for hours on end to keep in communication with their parents so as to
make themselves conspicuous for feeding visits by the adults. Lately, in
addition to adult Red-tailed calls, at least one of the local Blue Jays
has been imitating the begging call of the young Red-tails! I've heard
them imitate adult Red-tails before, but never the juvie's!
