several folks asked for directions. the job corps site is on the page 64 map in
the delorme atlas, square 5D. coming from cub run (in 7C), take 728 south of
town. the road quickly forks, and 728 actually turns right, but stay on the
main road, which turns into 1827 at that point. there's a little crossroads in
the top of square 6D labeled demunbrun's store. take the ollie road toward the
houchins ferry in mammoth cave, but you'll take a right fork about 3 miles (?)
before you get to the ferry. signs for the job corps are posted. i belive it's
at the end of ollie ridge road in 5D, but it's not labeled as such on the map.
i'm not sure if there are any regulations about birding in this area, but it is
national park property so i assume (?) it's fine. MATT, correct me immediately
via email if i'm wrong about this. once inside the gates, look for a ranger
station on the left. shortly past that is a road that cuts down to the right,
making a loop around a large overgrown field where we found the sparrows.it's
graveled and easy to drive. i've only been there once, so you may have to ask
directions at the ranger station. there's only one large field to the right of
all the buildings. that's the one.
we saw several birds in a brushpile and small trees a few hundred feet onto
that road on the left. there were several other possibilities around the loop,
leaving us to wonder how substantial the population really is. patience is
required, because there are plenty of immature field sparrows and buntings in
there to make life interesting.
good birding.
