Ben,
    I enjoyed your tale of the heron rescue very much...so sad that humans 
can't seem to enjoy the world without trashing it.
    Your story reminded me of an attempt I made to catch a Canada goose who had 
fishing line wound tightly around the ankle. The goose had one useless foot, 
but was still quite capable of flying, and lived at a small, nearby 
neighborhood pond. I tried to lure the goose close with food, with a plan to 
throw a net over it and hold on to it till the official animal rehab people 
could get there.. I had the number and my cell phone. It was a cold rainy day 
and there wasn't a soul in sight when I started.. but, after my first attempt, 
which was as close as I came to catching the goose, a mob materialized out of 
the rain, god knows from where, and instead of helping me catch the bird, they 
stood around looking at me like I was a goose molester. 
    Needless to say, the bird was spooked and I never got close again.. I don't 
know what eventually happened to the critter.

    BTW I'd love to know more about your kayak as I'm thinking of getting one 
but you can write me off list.
