[birdky] Shorebird Counts 2004
- From: HapC1@xxxxxxx

- Date: Sun, 15 Aug 2004 18:34:51 EDT
August 14 & 15 were the first count days in the 2004 Shorebird Counts.
Roseanna Denton, Roly Lloyd, Mary Walter and I participated in the first count
period.
Mitchell Lake in Ballard County had the best habitat and the most birds. The
sandbars along the Mississippi are exposed but are not yet offering ample
habitat for the birds. Lake #9 and Willow Pond in Fulton County were both high
and didn't have much exposed mud flat.
Shorebird numbers and species follow:
Semipalmated Plover - 2
Killdeer - 189
Lesser yellowlegs - 1
Solitary Sandpiper -18
Spotted Sandpiper -6
Semipalmated Sandpiper - 2
Least Sandpiper - 25
BAIRD'S Sandpiper -1 - Juvenile
Pectoral Sandpiper - 57
As usual it was great to be among other birders and out in the field. The
next count period is August 28 & 29.
