The Swallow-tailed Kite was observed again today from the end of the S 5
road on the Sinclair unit of the Peabody WMA in Muhlenberg County. For
several minutes it worked the hill for dragonflies on the northwest side of
the S 5 road. It was observed at one time quarreling with a Cooper's Hawk
before sailing high in the sky and out of sight toward the north. This
morning it was first located at 10:30 a.m. Central Time and last observed at
11:15.
For those who have missed seeing the kite, I would suggest staying in one
location down at the end of S 5 road and let the bird come to you. This is
what I did this morning. Just be patient and stay on task(thank you,
Brainard), scanning the sky in every direction. I arrived at 8:30 a.m. and
waited two hours for the kite to appear.
Also observed while waiting and scanning the sky:
Black Terns (10) flyover S 5 lake headed south,
a few Bell's Vireos, Henslow's Sparrows, Orchard Oriole (3).
**Today while birding the area at the end of S 5 road, I found a lost
eyepiece(adjustable rubber eyecup) off of what I think would be binoculars.
If anyone who lost one or knows someone who did, please let me know.**
