13 folks found 59 species in Union County on the August 23rd KOS/Beckham
Bird Club trip. We birded most of the day at the Peabody Camp Mines complex
east of Morganfield. Ten spp of shorebirds were observed including Semi
Plover, Killdeer, Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted Spiper, Semipal Spiper, Least
Spiper, Pectoral Spiper, Stilt Spiper, Buff-breasted Spiper (2); and
Short-billed Dowitcher (3). Also present were two Caspian Terns (an adult
feeding a young bird), 6 spp of dabbling ducks including 8 Gr-wg Teal, a
Gadwall, and 2 No Shovelers, several calling Soras (with glimpses of two),
and an adult Common Moorhen (spied by several who hung in late in search of
one). Passerines were highlighted by all six species of swallows and a
singing Sedge Wren.
