In between some nocturnal field work netting bats in Ballard County, Mark
Monroe and I got out a bit for birds this week.
On August 20 we looked around Ballard and Boatwright WMAs in Ballard County.
As Scott Record has reported, shorebirds are generally lacking in the
county, in part due to the lack of habitat that has been present in past
years -- no natural drawdown of Mitchell Lake, formerly one of the best fall
shorebirds spots in the Jackson Purchase :o(
As noted a couple of days ago by Scott, habitat on the Island No. 1/Laketon
Mississippi River sandbars is becoming exposed and some birds are collecting
-- unfortunately the bars will soon connect to the shoreline and the ATVs
will take over :o(
Yesterday, August 21, we had 10 spp of shorebirds including a Semi Plover,
lots of Killdeer, 4 juv. Willets, 25-30+ Pectorals, 4 spp of peeps including
a Baird's and several Westerns, 3 juv Sanderlings and a Buff-breasted.
Least Terns nested on the main bar earlier in the summer, and at least 60
were seen including numerous juvies plus at least 6 Black Terns. Lesser
Yellowlegs, Stilt Sandpiper, Short-billed Dowitcher, and a Common Snipe at
other locales brought a day list of shorebirds to 14. A "pip"-ing Alder
Flycatcher (not seen) was the passerine highlight.
