[birdky] RPT: Misc notes

Week before last a new Least Tern nesting colony was discovered on an
industrial pond near Calvert City in Marshall County. When several of us
from state government went out to follow up at the site last week, we
observed the following: 75+ R-b Gulls; 1 ad Herring Gull, 1 Caspian Tern, 23
Least Terns including 10 flying juvies, 1 American Avocet, 1 Spotted
Sandpiper and 1 Sanderling.

For those who looked unsuccessfully for the Swallow-tailed Kite on Saturday
(and perhaps Sunday?) . . . I wouldn't necessarily think that the bird has
left the vicinity. On every day it was seen, at least once during
observations it was described as circling quite high and out of sight. Also,
despite long periods of good foraging conditions weatherwise, it appeared to
be absent from the areas where it was seen best. I know it was
disappointing to miss the bird, but folks should not be discouraged from
continuing to look.

I birded Henderson and Union counties yesterday in the stifling heat:
highlights were at least 235 Great Egrets in one tiny drying slough in
western Henderson County (quite a sight!); a few immature Little Blue Herons
and Snowy Egrets, 11 spp of shorebirds including Semi Plover, Stilt Sp (1ad
& 3 juvies), and S-b Dowitcher (7 juvies), at least 3 calling Soras (fall
migrants must be around in numbers now), nice study of a feeding Least
Bittern, arriving migrant teal (mostly Blue-wings, but single Green-wings at
two spots), and both species of "marsh" wrens (it seems to be an especially
good year for Sedge Wrens, with individuals heard in two additional spots
yesterday).
