[birdky] Swallow-tailed Kite Update 15 August 2003

The Swallow-tailed Kite was present on the Sinclair
Unit of the Peabody Wildlife Management Area in
Muhlenburgh County again this morning. I located the
bird in the previously reported area along S5 at 1110
Central time. It fed there until 1135, then
thermalled to an altitude of a few thousand feet and
drifted NNW until I could no longer see it with my
binocular. I was able to obtain video of the bird.
A good deal of patience may be required of those
attempting to locate the kite. I searched all areas
where it had been previously reported for nearly an
hour, and also spent about 30 minutes scanning from a
hill along S2 with an excellent view of the area. I
finally found the bird on my second trip along S5. It
would drop out of sight behind the hills for extended
periods of time while feeding close to the ground and
treetops.
Other birds of interest observed included an adult
Mississippi Kite feeding high above the ridges far to
the west of the Sinclair Unit. Present at the
Paradise ash basin were 3 Western Sandpipers, 3
Semipalmated Sandpipers, 22 Least Sandpipers, and 4
Caspian Terns.
