Steve and others . . .
The area the S-t Kite is frequenting is on the KY
DeLorme Gazetteer, p. 63, block D-6. To reach the WMA
from US 431 in southern Muhlenberg County from either
Central City (along WK (a.k.a. Wendell Ford) Pkwy) at
exit #58 or points south, go east on KY 176 at the
community of Drakesboro. Go about 2 miles to the
entrance to the WMA on the right (south), just past
(east of) the long, valley lake (Goose Lake) on the
right (south). A quick turn onto the wide concrete
turnaround area (watch for the periodically abundant
coal trucks) and immediately bear right onto the
gravel road that winds around up onto the WMA. The WMA
roads are sparingly labelled with small yellow signs.
S1 is the road you enter the WMA on (this is near
where the bird was last seen); proceed on it towards
the southish until you meet a very wide 'Y'
intersection at the top of a small hill with a road
labelled S2 to the left. Scanning from here you may
be lucky to see the bird, but it seemed to be mostly
high in the sky when in this area. If you follow S2
to the left, the first improved gravel road is S3,
then further east is S5 on the right. The bird has
so far been best observed foraging LOW over the
treetops, apparently gleaning grasshoppers, cicadas,
and dragonflies from or close to the vegetation. As
noted on a previous post, this is a regulated state
WMA that REQUIRES about a $12.50 permit to have on
your person to enter. I am actually not positive where
permits can be purchased, but I THINK they can be
obtained at the Fast Fuel on US 431 in Central City
and at the quick mart at the corner of KY 176 and US
431 in Drakesboro (I always get one at the Minit Mart
at Exit #75 on the WK Pkwy at Beaver Dam).
A side note from the post yesterday, the bird was seen
crossing over S2 near the intersection of S2/S3...I
mistakenly posted S1 there in place of S2. The bird
was also seen well from S1 (near the water tower), S3,
and S5.
