[birdky] Swallow-tailed Kite update

The Swallow-tailed Kite was present again today
(Thursday, Aug 14) on the Sinclair unit of the Peabody
Wildlife Management Unit in Muhlenberg County. The
bird was relatively easy to locate and details of its
movements follow:
Brainard Palmer-Ball and I first located the bird and
9:30 a.m. Central Time at the location previously
described off of road S5. The bird initially was seen
cruising low from the north (from the S3 loop road) to
the hill on the north side of S5 where it spent about
10 minutes catching cicadas and dragonflies from just
above tree level. The bird then circled up relatively
high, fought with a juvenile osprey, and then streamed
back to the north. We then decided to drive around
and relocated the bird near the water tower off of S2
where it worked its way slowly south again. Our best
looks came when it passed relatively low over S1 just
west of the eastern intersection (power plant side) of
the S3 loop. After interacting with two juvenile
ospreys this time, the bird continued to the south
where it fed at tree level on the ridge line between
S3 and S5 again for about 10 minutes. The bird
basically repeated its routine by circling up then and
heading back to the north. We left the bird feeding
above the woodlot just northwest of the water tower
around 11 am Central Time.
Other birds of note at Sinclair included a flyover
Upland Sandpiper, Mississippi Kite, Sedge Wrens at 4
locations, many Bell's Vireos and Henslow's Sparrows,
a Willow/Alder Flycatcher, Northern Harriers, and a
Grasshopper Sparrow nest with small young.
