I visited several sites yesterday looking for some shorebirds. The day
started slow with not much except a few commoners. A drying slough at Ellis
Park racetrack had 48 Great Egrets.  At Sauerheber, I happened to meet up
with Ky Fish and Wildlife employees Mike Morton, Beth Ciuzio and Laura
Patton.  In the afternoon, Beth, Laura and I visited several sites and
tallied 13 spp of shorebirds, most at the Camp Mines complex in Union
County. The highlight was what appeared to be a crisply attired juvenile
Marbled Godwit!  Also present were two adult Long-billed Dowitchers, a
Sanderling, and small groups of Stilt Sandpipers.  A while later, a
Cooper's Hawk got many of the birds up, and we think the godwit departed.
While looking at a Ruddy Duck, Laura asked "what's that funny looking bird
there at the edge of the vegetation?" It moved into better view and we
could tell that it was a juvenile Virginia Rail!  It is unclear if this
could be a locally raised bird, but the chances of that seem greater than a
young bird of the year having already moved south.
