21 KOS/Beckham Bird Club members and guests birded a variety of sites in
Union and Henderson counties on August 14th. A showery morning gave way to
gusty, warm winds on a partly cloudy afternoon. The group got a tour of a
Peabody Coal Company facility near Morganfield where 11 species of
shorebirds were observed (Semi Plover, Killdeer, Les Yellowlegs, Spotty,
Solitary Sp, Pectoral, Least, Semi, Ruddy Turnstone (1 adult), Stilt Sps (at
least 4) and Short-billed Dowitcher (1a; 2 juv). Also observed were a
Caspian and a Black Tern, Great Egrets, Blue-winged Teal, coots and
Pied-billed Grebes and an imm. Black-crowned Night-Heron. Other stops
yielded the following nice additions: 125 Great Egrets in a single receding
pool; 1 imm Little Blue Heron, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, three singing Sedge
Wrens.
Yesterday, August 15th, I heard an Upland Sandpiper pass over my family's
farm in eastern Jefferson Co. (couldn't find the devil and think it may have
been up in the low clouds??). I also visited the Falls of the Ohio, which
has MUCH exposed habitat right now because of a low river level (these
conditions could change quickly with rain). 11 shorebirds were observed
including a molting Black-bellied Plover, about 10 Semi Plovers, Killdeer,
small numbers of both yellowlegs, Least Sps, Spottys, Pectoral Sps, 1 adult
Ruddy Turnstone, 2 Sanderlings (1a, 1juv), and a Semi Sp. Also present were
several Ring-billed Gulls, 5 Caspian Terns, about 20 Black Terns, and
numbers of common herons and ducks, corms.
