[birdky] BKY: RPT -- notes on nesting birds

In a recent conversation with some folks from the Ky Dept of Fish and
Wildlife Resources, I have found out that the Ky Lake Double-crested
Cormorants have been nesting at the Calloway County site since the summer of
2000. Apparently it has been a spot where they always have collected, but
nesting of a small number of pairs has been occurring for three years now.

On my family's farm in Jefferson County, I saw an adult kestrel go to a box
on one of our silos as if it had food last week. I climbed up and found
three large youngsters in the nest. This is the second year in a row that
I've noted a late nesting, but I've not known (and really still don't know
for sure) what's going on. Most pairs of kestrels do not nest more than
once in a year, so double brooding would be unusual (I saw young fledged
from another box on an adjacent silo earlier in the year). What I really
think is going on is that a second pair is coming in and using the nest
boxes once the first pair is completed. Last summer I saw two pairs of
kestrels bickering in the vicinity during the mid-summer and wondered if
that's what was up. I also noticed more than one "generation" of youngsters
in the air around the farm last year. I probably need to do some banding
:o)
