[birdky] Barn Owls and Few Highlights

Last evening about dusk while walking along Bennett
Lane on the WKU farm, a Barn Owl flew across the road
while being harassed by a Common Nighthawk. The
nighthawk chased it about halfway across a field. The
owl was headed toward the dairy barn area.

A friend of mine who lives in Smith's Grove told me
that his wife watched a Barn Owl catch a bat at their
security light recently. He also said he hears owls
screeching in the cemetery near his home often. He
brought me a feather yesterday that he found on the
ground at the cemetery amid a "huge pile of feathers
the same general color" and it was an inner primary
feather of a Barn Owl that had recently been consumed
by something. Nice to know that there is still a
population of Barn Owls in Smith's Grove.

Not many recent birding highlights in south-central
Kentucky as most waterbird spots are dry. A few are
listed below.

Snow Goose
Adult dark-morph present at Griffin Park in Bowling
Green since 28 June.

5 July
Single Long-billed and Short-billed Dowitchers present
at Paradise. An excellent side-by-side comparison.

8 July
A pair of adult Bald Eagles at Guthrie Swamp near
Guthrie, Kentucky, with Tom Durbin and Mark Bennett.

23 July
At least 5 Sedge Wrens singing on the Homestead Unit
of Peabody WMA in Ohio County.

25 July
Juvenile Least Tern present at Paradise.
