Mark and other readers of BIRDKY:
This is a Conservation issue! Is that an unacceptable topic?
All I asked was if anyone had seen a purple gallinule this year? I will further
expand that question to over the past 3 years? Five years?
Sounds like they have possibly all been killed off in KY, or they do not
commonly fly this far north. Something is fishy with that hunting season.
I may be wrong and if so please step forward and speak up with counts and
locations. That is a simple matter.
If the counts justify a hunting season so be it, if not, I suggest the Fish and
Wildlife people who make those decisions should reconsider. The main thing I
see on BirdKy is counts and locations, but maybe I missed some of the uncommon
species counts, for example, the purple gallinule numbers.
For the life of me I cannot understand why anyone would kill a Wood Duck, even
if there were a thousand floating out in the water like targets.
Within the Guidelines and Birdingly,
Preston Forsythe
Browder, KY

Subject: [birdky] KOS Bird Hunting Position
To Whom it May Concern:
The Kentucky Ornithological Society has no position on hunting, hunting
birds, or hunting Purple Gallinule and similarly uncommon species. The topic
was discussed briefly at the spring board meeting in response to posts on this
forum and a decision was made to retain the no position stance. KOS membership
includes avid hunters, those opposed to all hunting, those who question the
hunting of certain species, and all shapes and sizes of positions on this issue
not herein described. KOS as an organization recognizes the diversity of its
membership and does not have a position on this issue.
KOS is inherently apolitical.
BIRDKY is un-moderated.
At times posts on BIRDKY are a "violation" of the "rules". Some posts may
seem to be a "violation" to some subscribers and not to others. Dr. Ritchison
(Dr. Gary Ritchison of Eastern Kentucky University) and I have disagreed as to
the appropriateness of some posts in the past. Occasionally, Dr. Ritchison
provides follow-up regarding the appropriateness of a post to the list
subscribers or to the poster.
I ask all subscribers to read and to follow the guidelines for posting to
BIRDKY at this address: http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos/birdkyguide.htm
As president of KOS, the sponsoring organization, I ask specifically that
"unacceptable" topics contained therein and pasted below be avoided:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wild birds, birders, and birding are the accepted topics. Unacceptable topics
are:
a.. Chain letters
b.. Pet/caged/domestic birds
c.. The ethics and/or morality of hunting or falconry
d.. Feral cats
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some posts are in a "gray" area in terms of their appropriateness and
subscribers may disagree. The Web-posted guidelines for this case are copied
below for quick reference:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If a subscriber is in doubt about the appropriateness of a proposed posting,
please contact Gary Ritchison (gary.ritchison@xxxxxxx).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for all subscribers for helping to make BIRDKY a successful
un-moderated list-serve.
