Enjoyed a couple hours at Ballard today and am excited about the available
shorebird habitat at Mitchell Lake. I didn't arrive until 9:30 am and didn't
see many waders. I'll try to check the lake at daylight this week. The lake
is quite low and there are good shallow water areas on both ends and mudflats
beginning to form around the previously exposed bar at the levee. Also,
extensive mudflats will soon be appearing at the north end of the lake.
Shorebirds were seen using several areas on Mitchell Lake. Lower Beaver Dam
Slough is almost dry. There is no other shorebird habitat on Ballard WMA.
There are some bars beginning to form below Dam 53. Highlights from this
morning include:
Little blue heron 12
Miss kite 2
Bald eagle 1
Killdeer 150
Greater Yell legs 4
Lesser Yell legs 8
Solitary sandpiper 15+
Least sandpiper 25
Pectoral sandpiper 75
Least tern 10 +
All swallows except bank (Several hundred if not a couple thousand Martins
flew from the power lines when I arrived but did not return)
Sedge wren singing in a willow tree at the levee.
Dickcissels still singing as well
