[birdky] RPT: Bank Swallows - Lewis County WMA

July 28, 2007: The bank swallow colony was still quite active today
along the bank of the Ohio River at the Lewis County WMA. A small cloud
of swallows anxiously greeted me when I approached the bank.

While walking along the edge of one of the soybean fields, a wood thrush
along with numerous robins flushed out of the soybeans and flew into the
adjacent woodlot. The wood thrushes and red-eyed vireos were abundant
and actively singing from the small woodlots and tree-lined hedgerows on
the WMA. I believe they along with the robins and cedar waxwings are
already taking advantage of a not-quite-ripe bumper crop of berries.
The black cherry trees are absolutely loaded with berries. Wild grapes
are almost as abundant as the cherries. Pokeberries, elderberries, and
some sassafras berries rounded out the smorgasbord.
