[birdky] Bluebirds

Its been a banner year for bluebirds at the Hunting Creek Country Club golf
course in Prospect outside Louisville. Several years ago Roger Coates,
Dona's husband, constructed 18 bluebird houses, one for each hole, and we
placed
them around the course which meanders through the subdivisions here in eastern
Jefferson County. While not compulsively recording all events, I have
checked the houses every couple of weeks. This year, the number of house
sparrows
using the houses is markedly down. The number of house wrens is up including
2 nests in my quarter acre yard presently. One is actually in a wren house
where it is supposed to be.
Last night when I made my rounds, I found 3 active bluebird nests including
2 sitting on eggs. Only 2 sparrow nests with eggs were dispatched and
several wrens were still active. One of the bluebird nests was the third
clutch
in that box this year, a box previously only used by sparrows. So while the
fall migration starts to heat up others are still answering nature's call to
procreate.
